Spain & Italian Island Highlights Cruise Summary

Embark from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon for Cádiz, historic gateway to the New World, where the buildings of the old quarter seem to shimmer with silver when bathed in pure white sunlight.

Visit Jerez de la Frontera for a sampling of its most famous export, Sherry, before being invited to an authentic bodega, for practical insights into traditional Spanish cuisine during a tapas cookery class.

Alternatively, enjoy a daytrip to the magical city of Seville, birthplace of Flamenco, to discover its greatest UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Alcazar Royal Palace, once described as a vision of heaven on earth.

Cruising the Mediterranean, experience a spectacular entrance into the harbour of Cartagena, before exploring the Spanish port in the company of an expert local guide. Or visit the former La Unión mine, where the ancient Romans extracted silver and lead, before being entertained by a traditional flamenco show.

In the Balearics, take a sight-seeing tour of Menorca, including an exclusive wine and cheese tasting event. Or enjoy a guided hike through the diverse natural habitats of the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park. Alternatively, climb the peninsula of La Mola, where the 19th-century stone fortress is one of the most important historic landmarks in the archipelagos.

Arriving in Sardinia, get to the know a more authentic side of Italy’s second largest island, with a guided tour through the historic old quarter of Oristano, capital of the province of the same name, where the cobblestone lanes, beautiful churches, baroque buildings and piazzas lined with cafés are the perfect place to relax.

On the west coast of Sicily, discover the traditional port city of Trapani, originally named after the Greek word for “scythe,” due to its curved harbour. From here you may explore the archaeological park of Selinunte, one of the largest and most impressive of its kind in Europe, where excavations have revealed numerous temples, Doric columns and an extensive fortification system. Or pay a visit to the city of Marsala, to combine the historic with the culinary as you sample some of the region’s famous dessert wines.
