South American Pacific Discovery – Cruise Summary

Sail the east coast of Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to Fortaleza, before following in the footsteps of the explorer Vasco da Gama, as you cross the equator on your way to Cape Verde and the Canaries.

Dive into the crystal clear-blue waters of glitzy Búzios, a former fishing village made famous by Brigitte Bardot. Tour the colonial old quarter of Vitória city, known as “Little Rio de Janeiro,” or simply relax on the beach.

Explore the historic city of Ilhéus, followed by magical Salvador, Brazil’s original capital and one of the oldest colonial cities in Latin America. Ride the Lacerda Elevator to explore downtown and savour the fragrance of authentic chocolate at the Cocoa Museum.

Climb the steps of the Barra Lighthouse and dance to the rhythms of local music as you enjoy a Capoeira martial arts performance or taste the city’s Afro-Brazilian cuisine. Take a river boat tour through the former Dutch Brazilian capital of Recife, or head out to sea for a chance to snorkel the coral reefs that give the city its name.

In Natal, enjoy more swimming and snorkelling in magnificent lagoons and picturesque lakes, or drive a buggy across the desert landscapes and white sandy beaches. Enjoy a stroll through the old quarter of Brazil’s fifth largest city, Fortaleza, an appealing combination of sandy beaches, historic buildings and modern architecture, including the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Joseph.

Celebrate “Crossing the Line” of the Equator with a special ceremony on board your ship. Then relax with some time at sea to really make the most out of all the amenities available on board Vasco da Gama, before arriving in Praia on the island of Santiago, where the old Portuguese capital of Cidade Velha provides an illuminating insight into the history of the Cape Verde islands.

On São Vicente, see the Portuguese-style Nossa Senhora de Luz Catholic Church and take a scenic drive to the spectacular Monte Verde, the tallest mountain on the island, before returning to sea for three more relaxing days on your way to Tenerife.
