Italian & Adriatic Highlights Cruise Summary

Cruise the stunning coastlines of Italy and the Adriatic, beginning with the pine-forested island of Korcula, one of the largest islands in Croatia and reputedly the birthplace of Marco Polo. Enjoy a guided walk through the old quarter of the main town, including a visit to Polo’s former family home, or discover the culinary highlights of the island on a gourmet wine tour.

Relax on the beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters of Saranda in Albania, or discover the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site of Butrint, where excavations have revealed a Roman forum and an extensive townhouse known as Triconch Palace.

Alternatively, explore the hillside town of Gjirokastra, where the well-preserved Ottoman-era old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or visit the “bottomless” Blue Eye karst hole known as the Springs of Bistricë.

Step ashore in the picturesque city of Gallipoli on the south-eastern tip of Italy’s ‘boot’, before enjoying some dolce far niente, sweet idleness, on the promenade. Or take an excursion to Lecce, the ‘Florence of the South,’ for historical wonders including the 25,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and the column marking the end of the Appian Way.

Many a conqueror set their sights on Syracuse, one of the largest and wealthiest cities in ancient Europe. See the archaeological park of Neapolis and the historic island-town of Ortygia, at the centre of the city, or take a drive to the Late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto region.

Described by Goethe as a “patch of paradise,” Taormina has entranced visitors for centuries. Learn more about this glamourous hilltop town during a guided tour, where highlights include the 3rd-century BC Graeco-Roman Theatre, gloriously located with magical views of Mount Etna.

Few places bring history to life quite like the archaeological park in Pompeii, where a vibrant Roman town was destroyed during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Explore the streets and houses containing brightly coloured frescoes, or if you have already visited, you may like to spend the day in the picturesque town of Sorrento instead. Alternatively, a tour of Naples is also available, the perfect place to enjoy some of the local specialty, pizza a portafoglio
