Istanbul & Islands of the Aegean – Cruise Summary

Discover the close connections between two great historic nations on this cruise through the Aegean Sea, beginning with one of the most popular destinations in Greece, the picturesque island of Mykonos.

Enjoy a guided walk through the windmills and whitewashed houses of the main town, or Chora, or settle back for a leisurely panoramic drive to the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera. Alternatively, visit the UNESCO World Heritage sacred island of Delos, mythical birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, before cruising to tiny Patmos, the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,” where white villas cling to steep rocky slopes.

On the Turkish coast, see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ephesus, home to some of the best-preserved Hellenistic and Roman ruins in existence. Then in the province of Dikili, visit one of the oldest Christian places of worship on Earth, the Ören Yeri Basilica, as well as the ruins of the Kingdom of Pergamon, including the steepest theatre in the ancient world.

According to Greek myth, the port city of Volos was home to Jason and his crew of Argonauts. From here you will be able to witness the breathtaking UNESCO Heritage Byzantine monasteries, which sit atop the rock towers of Meteora, giving the magical impression of floating between heaven and earth.

Skiathos in the Sporades is famous for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear bays and as the location for the blockbuster movie, “Mamma Mia!” Enjoy a guided tour or simply relax and unwind, before arriving in Greece’s second city, Thessaloniki, for relics from the Roman and Byzantine eras, including the basilica Hagios Demetrios, the Rotunda and the mosaics of the Hagia Sofia. Or you may visit the ruins of Pella, former capital of ancient Macedonia.

The archaeological site of Philippi near Kavala is another UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient wonders to admire. As are the ruins of the city of Troy, said to have been home to the beautiful Helen and captured by the Greeks using the legendary Trojan Horse.

Finally, spend the night in the meeting point of two continents, the bustling city of Istanbul, to explore the stunning Topkapı Palace, the iconic Hagia Sophia and the famous Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world.
