The Ionian Islands, Sporades & Greece’s Peloponnese – Cruise Summary

Cruise the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese Peninsula and the “scattered” Sporades of the Aegean, on a Greek odyssey that also includes the capital of Athens and a chance to see the Corinth Canal.

Idyllic Corfu was a place of refuge for the shipwrecked Odysseus and has been enchanting visitors ever since. Succumb to the beauty of its charms on a tour through Corfu old town and discover why the 19th century Empress Elisabeth of Austria had the neoclassical Palace of Achilleion redesigned as her private residence.

On the southernmost Ionian Island of Zakynthos, feel the friendly welcome and authentic Greek joie de vivre as you explore its numerous secluded bays and historical sites.

Explore the picturesque town of Nafplion in the Peloponnese, or visit the ruins of Corinth, where the Panhellenic Isthmian Games of Ancient Greece were held in rotation with the Olympics.

Alternatively, see the historic Corinth Canal, a breathtaking engineering achievement dreamt of by the ancients and made reality in the 19th-century. Or relive the tales of Agamemnon and Homer’s heroes on a tour of Mycenae and the Citadel of Agamemnon, which legend holds was constructed with the aid of the Cyclops.

Arriving in Athens, discover the capital’s unparalleled treasure-trove of ancient wonders, from the iconic Parthenon temple to stadia and theatres galore. Take a stroll through

Syntagma Square as you explore the city. Or tour the Acropolis and Museum, which represents the zenith of artistic and architectural achievement during the 5th-century BC Athenian ‘Golden Age.’

Called the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,” the tiny island of Patmos in the Dodecanese has long been a site of Christian pilgrimage. During you time here, you may like to visit the small cave where St John received his revelation in 95AD to write his Gospel and dictate his Book of the Apocalypse, which has since been converted into a beautiful chapel built around a stone orifice said to have been used by the saint as a pillow.
